Metformin (NDMA Contamination) Settlement
In re Metformin Marketing and Sales Practices Litigation, No. 20-cv-02334-MCA-MAH (U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey)
Verified July 2026. Deadlines change by court order — always confirm the current date on the official site before you file.
A combined $5.55 million in settlements over allegations that generic metformin diabetes drugs made or sold by Teva, Granules, and Heritage were marketed as equivalent to Glucophage but were contaminated with NDMA (a probable carcinogen) and did not meet FDA standards, so buyers overpaid. The defendants deny wrongdoing. This settlement covers economic loss only — not personal injury or wrongful death. Eligible people can file a claim for free through the official settlement administrator until August 5, 2026.
Estimated payout
A pro-rata cash payment from the combined $5.55 million settlement fund, based on your qualifying metformin purchases.
Proof required?
Consumers can file without attaching records for smaller claims, but keep pharmacy receipts or records — the administrator may request transaction data (which is mandatory for claims of $100,000 or more).
Cost
Always free through the official administrator.
Who qualifies
People (and third-party payors) in the U.S. who paid any amount for a metformin-containing drug manufactured, distributed, or sold by Teva, Granules, or Heritage between July 20, 2015 and June 2, 2020, for personal or household use.
Background
Metformin is one of the most widely prescribed diabetes medicines in the world. In 2019–2020 the FDA and independent labs found that some generic versions contained NDMA — the same probable carcinogen behind the Zantac and valsartan recalls — above acceptable limits, triggering recalls and this economic-loss litigation over drugs that didn't meet federal standards.
What you need to file
- Pharmacy records or receipts for your metformin purchases, if you have them (helpful but not required for smaller consumer claims).
- The manufacturer or NDC number if it appears on your records.
